Fire Update

Please share to let friends and families know.

According to the USFS the Forest Wide Fire Ban will continue at least until January and possible longer, depending on rain. Rabun County has a ban on all our door burning.

Air Quality will be impacted due to the smoke of the fires across the area. Sensitive groups should take precautions. Med Link offices on Highway 441 in Clayton has N95 masks available as long as supplies last.

The Rock Mountain Fire:

…is at 7,000 acres and is 10 percent contained. The Forest Service believes it is human caused and remains under investigation.

Pre evacuations for Plum Orchard, Coleman River/Nichols Branch Road areas. Also pre evacuation for Tate City.

Charlies Creek Road and Tallulah River Roads remain closed as does the Appalachian Trail between Dick’s Creek Gap, GA and Rock Gap, NC.

The fire has moved into the Nantahala Wilderness to the north and continues to burn actively. Continued drought and low humidity are causing containment problems.

Crews will focus on the safety of the firefighters first and structures second. Those are and will remain the priority.

Timber Ridge Fire:

…is at 600 acres and is 100 percent contained. There are no evacuations and no closures. Crews continue to monitor this fire. No structures are currently in danger.

Burrell and Burrell’s 42 Fires:

…185 acres combined and is 100 percent contained. Under investigation. No closures and no structures in danger. Fire is being monitored.

Local Fire Fighters are now well supplied due to the tremendous support of the community. We will announce on the air and post on Facebook and on our website if things change.
