Weekend Chase Goes to SC and Back

A chase takes place after an officer with the Clayton Police Department initiates a simple traffic stop early Sunday morning,

According to a report on file with the Clayton Police Department, an officer with the Clayton Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for taillight requirements on Maple Street, causing the vehicle to slow and briefly stop before turning onto Warwoman Road, accelerating on Polly Gap Road, making its way onto Old Chechero Street and then onto Highway 76 and into South Carolina.

Assistant Police Chief Andy Strait explained what happened once the vehicle made its back into Georgia on Highway 76 and onto East Wolfcreek Road.

“At one point, maneuvering down the roadway, the officer’s vehicle and the suspect’s vehicle did make contact,” said Strait. “The [suspect’s] vehicle left the roadway, spun out, and the suspect was taken into custody.”

The driver, identified as Jared Craig Nelson, was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Obstructing of Hindering Law Enforcement, Driving on the Wrong Side of the Roadway, Weaving Over Roadway, Reckless Driving, Failure to Obey Stop Sign, and a Tag Light Requirement.

The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office were notified of the situation and assisted during the pursuit.
