Water and Sewer Authority Thinks Wholesale Water Rate Should Go Up

The Clayton Rabun County Water and Sewer Authority met yesterday.

One thing the authority discussed was the wholesale water rate, something that has been a topic of discussion for some time.

At the July Clayton City Council meeting, the city had agreed upon a wholesale water rate of $2.28. In order for that to become the rate, the authority would have to approve that rate as well. However, as Authority Chairman Randy Speed explained, that did not happen yesterday.

“The authority needs to decide if we agree to this rate of $2.28, and I don’t feel good with it,” said Speed. “I don’t feel like I’m representing what I’m put on this board for.”

The authority responded to the city’s proposed rate by coming up with a rate of their own, which Speed outlined.

“In order to get somewhere near that cost plus ten thousand dollars, we’ve picked a number,” said Speed. “We think it’s 34 more cents, which would make it $2.62.”

The Clayton City Council discussed that proposed rate at a work session later that evening.
