Trout Unlimited helping Rabun stay beautiful

A local organization called Trout Unlimted have been hard at work to conserve, protect and restore Rabun’s coldwater fisheries and our watersheds.

According to Charlie Breithaupt Treasurer of Rabun County TU, the organization works to not only conserve Rabun’s streams but also work closely with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the United States Forest Service in endeavors aimed towards keeping our water(s) resilient.

Breithaupt said often times TU works hand in hand with our local fisheries who help stock streams during the warmer months.

“TU has a basic approach to its conservation strategy. First, we use the best available science to protect headwater spawning habitat for trout. We reconnect tributaries with their rivers to ensure resilience, and we restore waters where development has impacted trout and salmon and the opportunity to fish for them,” he said.

For an organization that offers so much to the community, Breithaupt said TU is completely self-sufficient and funded solely from donations. Once a year, TU holds the Rabun Rendevous which Breithaupt said is their largest fundraiser and the public is welcomed to attend.

The event will be held Saturday, January 19 at the Dillard House beginning at 3 p.m. Cost for adult entry is $35 and will include dinner as well as a live auction.
