Torrential rain causes 2 more gates to open on Burton

EMA officials have advised Lake Burton now has two gates open which is expected to cause some problems.

EMA Director Micheal MAzarky said the water from Burton will flow over the spillway on Lake Seed and could potentially cause issues with Lake Rabun and areas below.

With rain expected to continue, it’s important to know what to do in case you encounter flooding or evacuations are ordered for low-lying residential properties.

According to ready.gov, floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States.

Here’s how to stay safe when flooding occurs:

Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.

Stay off of bridges over fast-moving water.
