Threat of flooding possible in coming days

Just as lake levels have been restored to below full elevation, the threat of incoming rain over the next week may prompt another round of flooding.

Last week, Rabun County Emergency Management Agency officials had their hands full as they monitored the many areas in the county that experienced washouts from heavy rains previously sustained.

A total of four gates was opened on Mathis Dam by Georgia Power on Lake Rabun.

According to North Georgia’s Lake Resource Office based in Lakemont, all of the gates on Lakes Rabun, Burton and Seed are up at this time. But that is subject to change depending on the rain

With weather forecasters predicting the incoming rain will deposit an additional four inches in the next 72-hours, it’s possible flooding could occur according to lake resource officials

The lake elevations are always subject to change, depending on the weather conditions. But individuals who may live below the dams and those with boats and water-related equipment on the lakes and facilities should always stay alert to changing conditions and be prepared to take the necessary steps to protect their property.

Georgia Power officials said you can monitor lake levels online and stay up to date with any elevation changes
