Theft by Extortion in Clayton under Investigation

The Criminal Investigations Division of the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office is looking into a theft by extortion case in Clayton.  On June 25, a deputy spoke to a man, who stated that he sent a nude picture of himself to a Snapchat user, thinking it was his ex-girlfriend.  Not long after sending the picture, the Snapchat user told him that they knew some of his followers and friends and were going to send the picture if he did not send $150 through a cash app.  He did not send any money but instead decided to report the incident.  The deputy suggested that he contact his friends and just be honest about what was going on and request that they ignore the message if they received one.  The deputy also suggested that in his future endeavors to not send out nude pictures of himself to people he did not know.  The case has been turned over to investigators.
