Tension High During Sheriff’s Debate

The two candidates on the ballot to be the Sheriff of Rabun County participated in a debate last week.

As decided by a coin toss, challenger Shawn Wilson began the debate. Wilson alleged that Sheriff Frank Andrews told employees of the Sheriff’s Office that Wilson would fire them should he be elected, which Andrews denied, saying that he DID say no matter what new candidate comes into office, there is always a possibility of personnel changes.

Wilson then played a recording of Andrews to back his statement, accused the Sheriff of lying, and said this:

“At this point in time, your credibility is gone, Sheriff, and it has been gone,” said Wilson.  “With that, I’ll just be honest, I’m asking for your resignation today, Sheriff.”

Andrews responded with this.

“I have not lied to the people, did I say I did not say that? No I didn’t. I did not lie to them. What I said was exactly what is true. Any sheriff that goes into office will bring a change of people in,” said Andrews. “And as far as the recording, was that a personal conversation between me and someone or what was it?”

Wilson said that the means of him obtaining the recording of Andrews did not matter.

More from Friday’s debate will be examined throughout the week.
