Tallulah River Campground remains closed, renovations underway

Forrest service officials with the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests are making the most of their time while the Tallulah River campground remains closed for renovations.

District Ranger Manager Jill Davis told WRBN/WGHC News that the Tallulah River campground was closed mid-May for the installation of a new toilet facility which was expected to be back up and running within a two week period.

According to the latest information from fs.usda.gov, “due to some delivery issues with the new building, the campground is still not opened.”

Davis explained that due to safety reasons, the campground will remain closed until the new toilet facility has been delivered.

“When they removed the old facility, the old bathroom, it wasn’t safe to open the campground with that hole being there. We certainly took advantage of the downtime because we weren’t expecting the campground to be closed this long,” Davis said.

“There was an issue with the delivery of the new toilet facility. There was a problem with the company who was contracted to deliver it so that’s why we wound up being closed a little longer than we expected. While we were closed, we went ahead and did some renovations,” she said.

Some renovations that campers can expect to see when the campground is re-opened on August 31 are improvements to the water/filtration systems, a brand new toilet facility and new “sustainable” picnic tables.

“We did some work on the water system. We had that all totally cleaned out and we had a new chlorination system installed. We also installed new tables which are also new to us and the forest,” Davis said. “They are expanded metal instead of the traditional wooden table. It’s coated with a plastic polymer and the table itself is metal. We’re hoping, and I guess this is kind of a trial, but that the tables are more sustainable since it will not rot or decompose.”
