Shoplifting Investigation turns into Drug Arrest

A shoplifting investigation from the Walmart in Clayton led to a drug arrest by the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office.  Around 10am on Aug. 31, a deputy was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a misdemeanor shoplifting complaint. The deputy met with the store manager and was told that a man walked out of the store with a pair of bluejeans without paying for them and sat in a vehicle in the parking lot.  The deputy located the individual, identified as 25-year-old Kenneth Chad Briggs. He was patted down by the deputy, who discovered he was wearing the $30 stolen pair of pants under his older pants. When Briggs emptied his pockets, the deputy discovered a crumpled-up piece of aluminum foil with some burn marks on it and a white powdery crystal-like substance.  Briggs told the deputy that it was methamphetamine. Briggs was arrested for misdemeanor theft by shoplifting and felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance. He was booked into the Rabun County Detention Center on the two charges.
