Sheriff discusses listed SPOST items

Rabunites will soon be allowed to voice their opinion on the special-purpose local-option sales tax come March.

SPLOST is a financing method for funding capital outlay projects in Georgia. Meaning, it’s an optional 1% sales tax levied by the county for the purpose of funding the building of parks, schools, roads, and other public facilities.

Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols commented on two of the listed projects, one being the nearly $4 million proposed jail expansion that would significantly increase the current detention center’s size.

Nichols said the Georgia Sheriff’s Association conducted a Jail Needs Assesment which provided findings that expansion was nessacary to keep up with Rabun County’s growing population.

Nichols said he hopes that the expansion will allow the detention center to better live up to the standards as set by the Georgia Sheriff’s Association.

Another item listed n the upcoming SPLOST Nichols said, is the $1 million dollar proposed construction for a new sheriff’s office.

He said the much needed new building will allow the sheriff’s department to better conduct their daily operations and continue keeping Rabun County a safe place.
