On the final day of the meetings, the Braves re-signed free-agent outfielder Reed Johnson on a year-deal with a club option for 2014. Reed gives Atlanta a versatile defensive player and right-handed hitter who led the majors with 18 pinch hits in 2012 and ranked second in the majors with a .413 average as a pinch-hitter.

The NHL rejected the players’ most recent offer for a collective bargaining agreement on Thursday, causing talks between the two sides to be suspended indefinitely. The two sides had met for nearly 20 hours over the past two days and reportedly exchanged proposals Wednesday in an effort to end the lockout, which is approaching the three-month mark
