School Superintendent Discusses Weather Warnings

The Rabun County Board of Education met Thursday.

One topic discussed is the weather warning system that has been installed throughout the school system, from the Elementary School to the High School, that plays a loud blast when inclement weather is near.

Rabun County School Superintendent Matt Arthur explained how the systems functions.

“It will signal if there’s lightning in the area, and it can be adjusted as to how far off we want it,” said Arthur. “Horn blasts and sirens will go off and everyone will know to clear the field. We’ve got 56 people who will be receiving text messages every time that goes off.”

Arthur says that this was done in conjunction with the county, so horn blasts are set up to sound at the Rabun County Recreation Department as well as the arena.

Arthur also says that the cost of an approximate $30,000 for the system was split between the county and the Board of Education.

Regarding carbon monoxide detectors in the schools, Arthur says that the school are totally electric, meaning there are no emissions of carbon monoxide.
