Road Sign Thieves Cited

Five young men have been cited for stealing road signs within Rabun County.

Rabun County Marshal Roy Lovell said that the 17 year olds were tied to the thefts of 13 signs in all.

The case was investigated by the Rabun County Marshal’s Office in conjunction with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office.

Lovell explained that stealing signs is dangerous, as emergency personnel and law enforcement rely on road signs to locate residences that need assistance.

“If someone is having a heart attack or if someone is trying to break into a woman’s house, it may be that law enforcement needs to get there quickly,” said Lovell. “But if they’re having to hunt the road, it could cost someone their life.”

Lovell said the maximum penalty for taking a road sign is a $1000 fine, as well as the possibility jail time, community service, and probation.

Lovell said the five boys reached a pre-trial diversion agreement in Magistrate court regarding their citations.
