RCFS informs on Christmas tree hazards

Putting up a Christmas tree following your turkey feast is most commonly a Thanksgiving tradition, but officials say it can actually be a hazard in disguise if not properly cared for.

According to Rabun County Assistant Fire Chief Justin Upchurch, there are a number of factors that can cause a dry tree to go up in flames – especially if it is without water for an extended period of time.

It’s also important to check your Christmas lights for any kinks or loose wires before stringing up the tree. It can only take one spark from a faulty light to cause an electrical fire.

Upchurch advised people who are buying a live tree, to check the tree’s condition before you leave the lot with it in tow.

Another important tip to keep in mind is to keep your tree away from any heat source that could shorten it’s lifespan.

Upchurch said lastly, to just be careful. Christmas tree fires are common in Rabun County and can cause serious damage.
