Rabun Gap will play Varsity Football this Fall
After months of scheduling amid the coronavirus pandemic, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School will be playing varsity football this fall, says Athletic Director Dale Earnhardt. “It has been a long and tedious process. We are fortunate that our state association, the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association, granted us permission to move forward with football about two weeks ago. So, the last week or week and a half our Executive Director has pretty much been gaining interest from the independent schools across North Carolina. There are roughly 19 that play 11-man football so he had to go through to see which ones were willing to play and which ones were willing to travel outside their little area. He did that most of last week. So, over the weekend, very fortunate for me that he was putting together the schedule for the majority of the teams. That has now come to be through our state office and we have a seven-game schedule. Now it is unusual. We have two teams that we are playing a home and away with so that is four of our games. We do have two other teams and then we were very fortunate that I reached out a couple of weeks ago and was able to tentatively get Union County on our schedule and so our executive director was able to work that in, so that is our seventh game on Nov. 6, we are going up to Union County. So, it is not a home game for us but it is like a home game because it will be a nice little short ride for us. Everything else will be either in Asheville or the Charlotte area or High Pointe area. We have three home games out of the seven games so it worked pretty well but it was nice for me to not have to try to reach out and find six or seven games, so it came from the state office. So, we are excited that we now actually have a start date.” Rabun Gap opens the season on the road at Christ School on September 25 with kickoff slated for 7:30pm.
