Rabun County Sheriff’s Office SROs train for Event that it Hopes never Comes
As the nation mourns the tragic school shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office is reassuring the community that School Resource Officers (SROs) train yearly for events that it hopes never comes, says Rabun County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Lt. Mark Gerrells II. “Yesterday’s event was tragic and senseless and our hearts go out to all of those affected, not only the faculty members, the students, the families, but that community in general. What they are having to go through is unimaginable and our hearts go out to them. As far as Rabun County, those may have noticed this morning when they dropped their students off at school, you should have seen an increase in law enforcement presence and this is just to reassure our community that we are here and that our schools take priority in this profession in keeping students safe in the schools on campus and the roadways around it. We do training yearly with our SROs. A lot of that consists of de-escalation training. It consists of training on the range with multi-weapon systems. We do everything we can to try to prepare ourselves for an event that we hope never comes.” Rabun County SROs are dedicated to ensuring the safety of students, faculty, and staff daily with security systems and protocols in place.
