Rabun County Schools experience Mayfield issues

After the Mayfield Dairy Plant in Braselton closed its doors, many issues have been popping up with establishments who currently hold a contract with Mayfield, such as Rabun County Schools.

The issue was first addressed at the most recent Board of Education meeting where board member Cindi Dean said their cafeteria has recently been experiencing a shortage of milk in the half-pint cartons.

“I know ya’ll have heard a little bit about the different cafeterias across Georgia that have been having problems with Mayfield, we have experienced a little bit of that. Their plant in Braselton closed,” Dean said. “Ever since they closed it, there’s been a shortage of milk in the half-pint cartons.”

The issue of a milk shortage is quite a problem, as federal regulations for child nutrition mandate that schools must offer milk as a part of a healthy meal.

Kristin Schupp, Director of School Nutrition said there was recently a day when there was no milk at all which was easily the biggest issue. But she has been in discussion with other counties involved in the milk bid.

Schupp said as of right now, the contract with Mayfield will remain in place until all of the counties involved can collaboratively make a decision.

Schupp said she is working to try to fix the problems recently experienced but will be moving forward with a determination regarding Mayfield in the New Year.
