Rabun Co. Commissioners approve Hotel and Motel Tax Increase Resolution

In an effort to keep up with surrounding counties, the Rabun County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution requesting the Georgia General Assembly adopt local legislation authorizing Rabun County to raise the hotel and motel tax to 8% at their meeting Tuesday night, September 27, 2022.  Rabun County Board Chairman Greg James says this keeps the county in line with other counties in Northeast Georgia.  “Some of the surrounding counties are at 8% already.  We’re at 5%.  What the county resolution is that we passed is the same as most of the cities have already passed or will pass.  I think every municipality and the county are going to be doing this in lockstep, it will be identical resolutions to ask our legislators so we can change that tax to 8%.  The reason we want to do it, not only is it more money that comes from outside sources, is that it gives us more latitude on how to use that money.  We can use it for brick-and-mortar projects.”  People coming into the county use streets, water, and sewer too so now the increased hotel and motel tax will help pay for some of that as well as future projects in the county.
