Prescribed Fire planned for Wilson Knob Area of Rabun County

The U.S. Forest Service announces that the Chattooga River Ranger District is applying prescribed fire to an area located approximately 7 miles northeast of Clayton and approximately 3 miles southeast of Sky Valley in the Wilson Knob area of Rabun County on Friday, April 16, 2021.  A section of the Bartram Trail borders this burn unit. Depending on conditions, this #GoodFire could consist of up to 800 acres.  Objectives include hazardous fuel reduction, healthy forest restoration, and wildlife habitat improvement.  If weather conditions on-site change or become unfavorable, the controlled burn is subject to being cancelled.  When conditions are just right, fire managers begin the prescribed fire treatments essential to improving wildlife habitat and maintaining a healthy forest. Every year, fire managers successfully treat around 35,000 acres on the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests through prescribed fire.
