More Details in Sunday Night Shooting

More details are available regarding a Sunday night shooting in downtown Clayton.

According to a report on file with the Clayton Police Department, officers as well as deputies from the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office responded to an altercation Duncan Street just behind the Clayton Post Office Sunday night just after 9pm.

Clayton Police Chief Lindsey Owens said that during the altercation, a man, identified as Edward Ashling of Franklin, North Carolina, was shot.

“During the altercation, there was a white male that was shot with a 9 millimeter pistol,” said Owens. “He left the scene after being shot and drove himself to Franklin, North Carolina to the Emergency Room at Angel Medical Center.”

Sources with the Clayton Police Department say Ashling arrived at the Emergency Room with a bullet lodged in his neck and a gunshot wound in his arm.

It is reported the shot struck Ashling’s arm, which he had raised in a self-preservation effort, causing the bullet to slow down before lodging in his neck.

His current condition is unknown at this time.

The cause of the altercation which led to this shooting is still under investigation by the GBI and the Clayton Police Department.

No charges have been filed at this time.
