Meriwether Douglass Adams

Meriwether Douglass Adams, age 83, of Rabun Gap, GA, went on around the bend on June 19, 2019.

Doug, as all knew him, was born the son of the late Meriwether Flournoy (Bubber) Adams Jr. and Frances Elizabeth Martin, on September 26, 1935, in Albany, GA. Doug lived in Decatur from 3rd grade until college. He attended the Winnona Park (Elementary) School in Decatur, GA and the Decatur Boys High School, and he graduated from the Decatur High School. He “got out” of the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.  He then worked for Lockheed Aircraft Company and Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Company in the Atlanta area. Doug also served his country as a member of the Army Reserves. He relocated to Rabun Gap, GA, and joined Burlington Industries, where he would work from 1965 to 1992. He would spend four additional years at Fruit of the Loom before retiring in 1996.

Doug was active in various committees and organizations in his community, including the Chattooga Coalition, the Rabun County Memorial Hospital Authority, Foxfire Fund Community Advisory Board, DHS Class of 1954 Reunion Committee, Rabun County Jaycees, Clayton Rotary Club, Rabun County Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Tech Alumni Association, Southeastern Bluegrass Association, Georgia Forest Watch, Clayton First United Methodist Church, and the Rabun County Bowling League. He also was a USDA Forest Service Volunteer, a Boy Scout Troop 6 volunteer, Curriculum Advisor to GA Tech School of Textile Engineering, and Founding President of Klondike Enterprises.

Doug was honored with an induction into the First Class of the Academy of Distinguished Engineering Alumni (Georgia Tech), Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service (Trout Unlimited), First Chairman’s Award for Innovation (Burlington Ind.), Outstanding Leadership and Dedicated Service (Fruit of the Loom), Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Personal Achievement and Leadership in Volunteer Service (USDA), Pink Cadillac Award (DHS 50th Reunion Committee), Selected For Outstanding Ability, Accomplishment, & Service to Community & Nation (Outstanding Young Men of America), and HAWGATHAYAR Award (W.T. Kelly G.H. Institute, A Division of Klondike Enterprises)

His survivors include his loving wife, Eedee Adams; his son, Brooks Martin Adams (Amanda); his daughter, Allison Olivia Adams; and two grandchildren, Avril and Calder Adams.

Doug loved his family. He enjoyed bluegrass music, camping, visiting the Chattooga and Nantahala Rivers, road trips to the Rocky Mountains, and fly fishing for trout. He was a conservationist “and a hell of an engineer!”

In accordance with Doug’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Doug asked that donations be made to the Rabun Chapter of Trout Unlimited, PO Box 371 Clayton, GA 30525 or to the Smithgall Woods Education Center for the Youth Conservation Program, 61 Tsalaki Trail Helen, GA 30548.
