May Puts Stop to Unemployment Decline

After several months on the decline, Georgia’s unemployment rate went up in May.The Georgia Department of Labor announced that Georgia’s  unemployment rate for May was 7.2 percent, up three-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 6.9 percent in April. The rate in May of last year was 8.4 percent. State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says the last time Georgia saw an unemployment decrease in May was back in 1999…

“This typical happens this time of year, because this is when high schools have graduation, all of the colleges and universities have graduation, and so we saw a tremendous amount of people go into the workforce.”

May’s unemployment numbers for Rabun County should be released later this week.
