Lookout for Scams in 2013

As we move forward into 2013, officials warn of possible scams.

Investigator Gerald Johnson with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office said, “if something sounds too good to be true or sound far fetched, then please do a little independent investigation before you send money or personal identification information to anyone, or please contact the Sheriff’s Office and have us verify if the information is correct or not.”

One scam that was reported in Rabun County in 2012 involved someone calling saying a relative was in some form of trouble in a different country, and that money needed to be sent to help them.

In that particular case, the relative was contacted and was not out of the country nor in trouble, and in that situation, law enforcement advised not giving the caller any money or information.
