Locust Grove Police Officer killed in line of duty

LOCUST GROVE — On Friday, February 9, 2018, officers from the Locust Grove Police Department (LGPD) and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) were shot while attempting to arrest a Locust Grove man.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested to investigate the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 10:53 a.m., HCSO Deputy Sidwell Callaway and Deputy Mike Corley were located at 1260 Saint Francis Court in Locust Grove for the purpose of executing an arrest warrant on Tierre Guthrie, age 39.  Guthrie was wanted for failure to appear in court regarding traffic violations.

Deputies encountered Guthrie inside the residence at which time, he became combative and escalated the situation. Locust Grove Police Department Officer Chase Maddox arrived on scene to assist the deputies.

A fight ensued resulting in Guthrie and the officers firing their weapons. Guthrie was shot and died at the scene.  Both Deputy Callaway and Deputy Corley were wounded and taken to Atlanta Medical Center.  Deputy Corley was shot in his protective vest.  He was treated and released.  Deputy Callaway was shot in the lower abdomen but is now in stable condition.

Officer Maddox was transported to Atlanta Medical Center where he later died.

An autopsy was performed on Maddox at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Decatur. Preliminary results indicate Maddox was shot three times, with the fatal wound being to the head.

An autopsy was also performed on Tierre Guthrie.  Preliminary results indicate Guthrie was shot four times, with two of those wounds to his chest.
