Inmate Escapes from Hospital

 

On October 2, 2017 at approximately 17:51 hours, deputies responded to 171 Bradford Road in reference to a criminal trespass complaint.  Upon arrival deputies noticed an individual on scene that was acting suspiciously.  Deputies discovered that the individual identified as James William Caldwell did have an active probation violation warrant.  Caldwell fled on foot and was apprehended in the area of 2040 Hwy 76 West.  Caldwell started complaining of chest pains and Rabun EMS was requested to evaluate him on the scene.  It was determined by Rabun EMS that Caldwell needed to be transported to the hospital for an evaluation.  Caldwell was admitted to Mountain Lakes Medical Center for further evaluation.  On the night of October 3, 2017, at approximately 10:33 pm Caldwell left the hospital on foot after exiting his room and gaining accesses to the roof.  Rabun County Sheriff’s Deputies along with officers from the Clayton Police Department and Mountain City Police Department responded to the area to look for Caldwell.  The Department of Corrections K-9 Units were also requested to assist in the search for Caldwell.  Caldwell was last seen in the 300 block Payne Hill Drive.
