High Wind Warning in Effect

As Hurricane Sandy moves up the East Coast, a weather warning comes to the area.

A High Wind Warning is in effect for Rabun County and the surrounding area until the middle of this week.

The winds are expected to be blowing towards the northwest at a rate of 25 and 35 miles per hour with possible gusts up to 65 miles per hour until the warning expires at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Doug Outlaw with the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg explained the cause of this warning.

“With the hurricane, as it merges with the trough coming in from the Great Lakes region, its just a huge storm,” said Outlaw.  “We’re going to experience this right on into the middle of the week.”

Outlaw said to be aware of the possibility of fallen trees and power outages due to the high winds.

“Especially any trees that look like their rotting and ready to fall over,” said Outlaw. “With a situation like this, those are the most likely to fall, and certainly be prepared for power outages.”

Again, these windy conditions are expected to be in the area until Wednesday morning.
