Heavy rain prompts unfavorable road conditions in Rabun County

As of early Friday morning, the Flood Watch placed on Rabun County has expired. However, a slew of roads remain in unfavorable conditions from previous heavy rainfall.

Over the last 72 hours, Rabun County garnered as much as 7 inches of rain in some locations, prompting creeks and rivers to spill out onto nearby roads.

According to local officials, several complaints have also advised trees down that are obstructing traffic such as the one on Joe Davis Road and Old 441.

Rabun County EMA/SAR would like to remind motorists to use extreme caution when navigating slick roads. Although rainfall may have let up, standing water may still be present on the roads.

“Try to avoid standing water if you can. Don’t drive into flood water that’s moving or more than 10cm (4 inches) deep,” officials said. “Also, let approaching cars pass first. Drive slowly and steadily so you don’t make a bow wave. Test your brakes as soon as you can afterwards.”

As of Friday morning, the following roads have been reported to have standing water:

Bridge Creek Road

Old 441

Saga Mountain

Robinson Mountain Road

Twilight Road/Joe Davis Road, pond overflow
