Halloween Safety Tips, Trunk or Treat at Courthouse

As Halloween is tomorrow, parents need to make sure their children are protected throughout the night’s festivities.

Lisa Thompson with Safe Kids Rabun gave a few tips for making Halloween both fun and safe.

“Go to familiar ares that are well lit, trick or treat with an adult, and never go into homes with strangers,” said Thompson.  “While trick or treating, we ask that parents inspect the candy and look for any tampering with the wrappers.”

Thompson recommended that children’s shoes and costumes be well fitting as to avoid tripping and falling, that children utilize makeup instead of masks to avoid impaired vision, and that children have reflective material on their costumes to make sure that both parents and drivers can see where a child is.

Thompson also recommended not taking homemade treats from strangers, not necessarily because of dangerous ingredients, but because of the possibility of a child being allergic to something in the treat.

Thompson also said there is a Trunk or Treat taking place at the courthouse tomorrow night, which she has taken her own kids to and been very pleased.

“All of the people are very nice, and of course, they have pre-bagged candy that was donated to the churches or that the churches buy themselves,” said Thompson. “You see a very good turnout.”

This year’s Trunk or Treat is sponsored by the Mountain City United Methodist Church and the Clayton Cruisers. It begins at 6pm tomorrow night and goes until 8.
