By Charlie Bauder, WNEG, Toccoa

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday it is looking for two individuals in connection to a child cruelty case that may be in the Toccoa area.

Sgt. Richard Stein of the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office said that authorities are looking for 26-year-old Elesha Lynn Barnett and 34-year-old Timothy Jerry Powers.

Stein said that Barnett is wanted on four counts of second-degree cruelty to children and child abandonment. Meanwhile, Powers is wanted for a probation violation and also for questioning in connection to the child cruelty case.

According to Stein, the case started with an investigation into the possible sale of a child and led to the discovery of alleged child cruelty and abandonment issues.

He said that the couple is believed to possibly be staying in the Toccoa area or perhaps in South Carolina.

Anyone with information should call law enforcement.

The children are in the custody of the Department of Family and Children’s Services.
