Georgians to Pay Extra for Gas this Summer

On Monday, Governor Nathan Deal signed House Bill 170, the State Transportation Funding Act into law. The new law changes how Georgia taxes gas and diesel fuel in an effort to raise money for the State’s transportation projects and was developed after recommendations from the Joint Study Committee on Critical Infrastructure Funding.

The new law is expected to generate almost $1 billion in new transportation funding annually by imposing a 26-cent per gallon excise tax on gasoline and a 29-cent per gallon tax on diesel fuel, though The bill moves and redistributes funds in a way that will cause consumers to only experience around a 6 cent increase at the pump. The new Transportation Act will take effect on July 1st of this year.
