Foxfire Mountaineer Festival This Weekend

The Foxfire Mountaineer Festival kicks off this weekend. The festival is a celebration of the local culture that was started with the first Mountaineer Festival in 1962 and ran until 1978. The Festival was restarted in 2008 and joined by Foxfire in 2010. This year the event will run from 10am till 6pm on Saturday and finish with the Rascal Race Soapbox Derby down Hiawassie St. at 6pm. The cost is $5 dollars per person with a $20 max for families with half the gate fees and most proceeds going to the Foxfire Fund for scholarships and education. Tonya Rolader says a couple things you should know about the festival are…

“You must know that Foxfire is one of the number one sources preserving our heritage, that without them I’m afraid would be lost. You get to come out a see the people who are still demonstrating doing these crafts that again, without this would be lost and its a treasure.”

Tonya also said…

“Its a reunion. I came as a small child, I have friends who came as small children, and now at this point this many years into it you see faces that this is the only time you will see them. It’s a homecoming for people who are from here, but also people who have enjoyed this area. They come here to experience it one more time. And its fall, wonderful weather, October and its time to hit the mountains. I think we carry alot of fun for people in the area and that come for this event.”

There will be two entrances one at the Civic Center and one at City Hall and parking throughout the city.
