Fox tests positive for rabies

A Habersham man who was out walking with his dog was attacked by a rabid fox.

According to Habersham Health and Public Safety officials, the fox has been tested positive for the rabies virus.

Fortunately for the man and his dog, neither were scratched nor bit by the rabid animal and were able to make a quick getaway before an onlooker was able to shoot it.

However, health officials did confirm that the man went and received “post-exposure” shots at the local ER just as a precautionary measure.

As warmer weather descends, many wild animals will become more active. So now is as good as time as any to make sure you and your furry friends are up to date on your rabies vaccinations.

If by chance you do happen to come into contact with a suspected rabid animal, officials advise calling Rabun County Animal Control, who operate under the direction of Rabun Paws 4 Life, Inc.
