Flu cases finally on the decline

Flu season finally seems to be winding down.

The intensity indicator for flu cases in the state was low – 4 on a scale of 1-10 – according to the latest report issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health. This season, the state spent weeks at the high end of the scale.

Those weeks have taken their toll on Georgians affected by the flu. So far this season, there have been 35 confirmed flu-related deaths across the state, along with more than 1,500 hospitalizations attributed to the flu.

Although, you may not be completely exempt from catching the flu just yet.

Despite the decline, health officials say numbers may continue to rise because of the lag between reports and confirmation.

According to Dave Palmer Public Information Officer for District 2 Public Health, it’s still a good idea to take precautionary measures as always and be conscious to not spread germs.

To help stop the spread of germs wash your hands often with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home if you are sick. Cleaning and disinfecting common surfaces in your home and work area can also limit the spread of germs.
