Flash Flood Watch issued until late Thursday for Rabun County

Although Rabun County experienced a brief break in the rain Tuesday, another flood watch has been issued as of Wednesday morning and will remain in effect until Thursday evening.

Rabun County EMA/SAR Director Micheal Mazarky said it’s important to keep an eye on the forecast under these conditions in case of conditions worsen.

Predictions from the National Weather Service estimate another four inches of rain could accumulate in the next two days, on top of the previous four inches of rain received earlier in the week.

Mazarky also said there is a strong possibility of snow flurries overnight, but no accumulation is expected.

Remember, flash floods develop so rapidly that you may not get a warning. Any time a warning is issued, climb to safety immediately. Do not remain in a low-lying area.

Consumers can sign up to receive imminent threat alerts from Code Red according to Mazarky and signing up only takes a few minutes and can easily be done via a smartphone or tablet.

Lastly, Mazarky emphasized should flooding occur, do not drive on any roads that appear to have any standing water on them – just a few inches can cause a vehicle to hydroplane.
