First Reading of Three Policy Amendments at Board of Education Meeting

The Rabun County Board of Education met last night.

One item of discussion at the meeting was the first reading of amendments to three Board of Education Policies; one regarding student attendance, one regarding medication, and one regarding child abuse or neglect.

The major change in the policy for student attendance that was read involves how the parents are notified when a child is absent five times. Previously, a letter had to be sent by way of certified mail with a return receipt, but first class mail may now be used.

The amendment regarding medication that was read is in response to the new diabetic medical management plan, which School Superintendent Matt Arthur explained.

“That’s a new law that every student with diabetes has to have this medical management plan drawn up by their doctor,” said Arthur. “That’s so everybody who comes in contact with the student, including bus drivers, are aware of that plan.”

One minor change of wording to the child abuse and neglect policy was also read.
