First Major Traffic Shift for SR 53 Westbound Bridge Replacement

On Friday, July 17, barges and cranes will be mobilized on the lake at the State Route 53 westbound bridge, also known as the Jerry Jackson Bridge to begin replacing this 64-year-old structure.  Traffic will shift over in order to allow construction crews to safely begin working.  Drivers need to be aware of the following: Eastbound lanes on SR 53 over Chattahoochee River will be shifted right.  A temporary traffic barrier will be constructed to the left of the eastbound bridge.  The new westbound bridge will be constructed between the existing eastbound and westbound bridges.  Motorists will still be able to travel on the existing eastbound and westbound bridges while the new bridge is being constructed. Upon completion, traffic will be shifted to the new bridge and demolition of the existing bridge will take place.  Construction is scheduled to be complete by December 2022.  The new bridge is being constructed utilizing innovative Design-Build techniques that allow for an accelerated schedule. The Department is working with ER Snell Contractors, Inc. and Atlas to deliver this project.  Motorists should be alert to the lane shift and signage and are encouraged to slow their speed and drive with caution though the work zone. For alternate route options, drivers may wish to call #511Georgia for assistance.  Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app. GDOT maintenance team members who repair roads and bridges and GDOT project teams who oversee construction projects are continuing their essential work, while following sanitary work practices prescribed by health agencies to protect themselves and the public from COVID-19.
