Fire Burns 15 Acres Sunday

A fire burns a wooded area next to Highway 441 near Walmart over the weekend.

Responders were dispatched to the fire which began along the roadside of Highway 441 just after 3:00pm Sunday, and took around three hours to contain the approximately 15 acre blaze.

The Chief Ranger On-Scene Sunday Shannon Dean said that containing the fire was a multi-faceted effort.

“The fire was contained at an estimated 15 acres with efforts by the U.S. Forest Service, the Georgia Forestry, and the Rabun County Fire Department. We did use a helicopter to pretreat some areas and put water drops on the fire, we also used a dozer to put in a dozer line.”

Dean said the cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.

“I looked where the fire started and it was undetermined as far as any source, so it could have been caused by a vehicle dragging something or a spark off a vehicle.”

Dean said that no structures were threatened during the blaze.
