EMA/SAR Director warns of potential flooding

A flood advisory was issued for Rabun County following substantial rain over the past few days and local safety officials are urging the public to stay aware should the advisory become a warning.

Rabun County EMA/SAR Director Micheal Mazarky said Georgia Power has already opened one gate at Mathis Dam and another one is likely should the rain continue.

As of right now, the roads around Mathis Dam are open but low lying areas and fields are seeing some flooding.

Weather projections over this week are possibly calling for 6-7 inches of total rain.

Mazarky urges the public to please keep an eye on the changing conditions and remember that if roads start to flood, DO NOT drive on them for your own safety.
