Clayton PD honors fallen DeKalb County Police Officer

Clayton Police Chief Andy Strait participated in the highway escort of an officer from Dalkab County who was killed in the line of duty.

The escort of Officer Edgar Isidro Flores occurred over the weekend and incorporated many North Georgia law enforcement agencies such as the Clayton Police Department, Baldwin Police Department, Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, Cornelia Police Department, Hall County and the entire department from Dekalb County.

Strait said it was an emotional sight to witness as the law enforcement community came together to support Officer Flores who was killed from a traffic-stop shooting.

“It was an awesome sight to see, because there were so many different agencies involved. A lot of the cars were Dekalb County. One of the cops that drove by rolled her window down as she was passing us and said ‘thank you,’ and that’s when it kinda hit me,” Strait said. “These are all my family driving down this road. Every one of these cars is my family. It’s just such a tight-knit community and everyone came together.”

Strait said himself and officers from the Clayton Police Department will be in attendance at Officer Flores burial in Demorest following the funeral service in Flowery Branch Wednesday.

“We’re going to go Wednesday to the graveside cemetery in Demorest as a department and be in the group to pay our respects,” Strait said. “In my career, I’ve had to go to so many funerals. Three of my friends have died while servin as a police officer and it just means so much to me when there is support.”

Strait said the amount of support from community members was also evident during the escort.

Strait added that it means so much to him to have had the opportunity to be there to support Officer Flores.
