Clayton PD does away with recent addition of Parking Enforcement Officer due to court rulings

It’s been a little over two weeks since the Clayton City Council agreed to employ a part-time parking enforcement officer to assist under the direction of the Clayton Police Department, and that position has now been overturned due to a recent court ruling.

According to Clayton Police Chief Andy Strait, due to the ruling in the 6th circuit, the tire-chalking was eliminated to avoid any potential liabilities the city could face by not complying.

“Since it is being challenged, I want to avoid any possibility of litigation against the city since the substance of the ruling applies to the 4th Amendment,” he said.

The parking enforcement officer position has been removed for the moment, but that doesn’t mean there will be any shortage of officers patrolling downtown Clayton making sure there are no violations.

“Officers are still going to be downtown. If they see any violations they are going to handle them and if there are any complaints that come into the office, we will also handle those immediately,” Strait said. “There’s not going to be any lack of enforcememnt, it’s just the tire chalking is the only thing that is going to stop. We will still be out there to handle any complaints.”
