Chattooga Conservancy provides update on Upper Warwoman Watershed Assessment

At the most recent forum held by the Chattooga Conservancy, in cooperation with the City of Clayton and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, information pertaining to the quality of water was revealed to those in attendance.

The Watershed Management Plan for the Stekoa Creek watershed has been in progress for several years and efforts to gather information to work towards bettering the condition of the watershed and its contributing sources are ongoing.

Most recently discussed by Chattooga Conservancy officials were the findings of sediment and pollution in its waterways, posing a very critical threat to the water quality and nearby wildlife.

Conversation regarding Warwoman Creek’s high sedimentary levels was among the most discussed item as Wildlife Resource Division officials informed that although the wildlife did contribute some pollution, humans also were polluting the watershed.

Efforts to negate the high sedimentary levels continue to be ongoing.

The Chattooga Conservancy also submitted a grant request in cooperation with the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission that if successful in identifying key contributors, the conservancy will continue their work in the Rabun County community to address “non-point” sources of pollution in the Stekoa Creek watershed.
