Car Crash leads to DUI Charges

An Anderson, South Carolina woman stands charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving too fast for conditions, failure to maintain lane, possession of an open alcohol container, and a seat belt violation after a wreck on Highway 76 West near the Popcorn Overlook.  The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Feb. 6, a deputy was dispatched to a motor vehicle crash with a female trapped inside.  The deputy arrived along with another deputy, the fire department, and EMS.  They found a 2019 Nissan Rogue with a South Carolina plate on its passenger side off of the road.  The woman, 50-year-old Karen Bringhurst of Anderson, South Carolina told the deputy she was on her way home from the casino.  The deputy noticed she had glassy eyes, could not focus, and was speaking slowly.  She was then transported by EMS to Habersham Medical Center for her injuries.  A wrecker service was called to the scene and once the car was flipped back on its tires, the deputy located a 12 pack of beer with one open and one missing, and an unopened Vodka bottle.  On Feb. 16, Bringhurst turned herself in at the Rabun County Detention Center on the charges and also signed the citations as well as received an administration license suspension.  She was then booked into the Rabun County Detention Center.
