North Georgia Technical College President Announces Retirement

From WNEG Radio, Toccoa

Change is coming this Summer to the leadership at North Georgia Technical College.

Friday, Dr. Gail Thaxton announced that she will retire from her post as President of North Georgia Technical College effective August 1.

Thaxton has served at North Georgia Technical College since 2012 when she moved to Habersham County from Waycross, where she served as president of Okefenokee Technical College since 2005.

Dr. Thaxton said it has been a very difficult decision, as she still enjoys going to work every morning and doing what the school does to support students.

She also said she appreciates the students, faculty, and staff at North Georgia Technical College.

Meanwhile, her replacement may already be on campus.

Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Gretchen Corbin has announced that she will recommend Dr. Mark Ivester for appointment as the next President at North Georgia Technical College.

Dr. Ivester is currently the school’s Vice President of Economic Development.

He also served as Acting President at North Georgia Tech while Dr. Thaxton was serving as Interim President at Athens Technical College while that school sought a new president.

That lasted from last Summer through this past Spring.

The Technical College System of Georgia State Board is expected to consider Ivester’s appointment at its meeting on June 2.

Dr. Thaxton’s last day at North Georgia Tech is set to be July 31.
