Fatal Accident on 441

The Georgia State Patrol has released new details of a Tuesday afternoon accident in Rabun County that left two people dead and injured three others. The woman who authorities say caused the wreck is in custody and officials says she will be charged with DUI.

The accident happened at the intersection of Hwy. 441 South and Wolf Creek Road near Wiley. It was reported to Rabun County authorities at 2:44 p.m.

State Patrol TFC Joseph Tucker says the suspected DUI driver, whose name has not yet been released, was driving a Toyota Tacoma west on Wolf Creek when she made a left hand turn traveling south in the northbound lanes of Hwy. 441. As the driver attempted to move into the southbound lanes she struck a Nissan pickup traveling south, carrying five people. The impact caused the Nissan to overturn twice, ejecting four unrestrained occupants. TFC Tucker says a 4-year old boy was securely fastened in his car seat and was not ejected.

Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. One was airlifted to Greenville in serious condition while the child and another person in the Nissan were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Trooper Tucker says at this point it appears at least two of the victims were related. None of their names have been released pending notification of next of kin.

The alleged DUI driver was uninjured.

A portion of Hwy. 441 South near the crash site was closed for more than four hours as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage. The road reopened at 7 p.m.

GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is investigating the accident.
